Chatterton, Thomas

(20 nov. 1752, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Inglaterra– 24 ago. 1770, Londres).

Poeta inglés. A los 11 años, Chatterton escribió una égloga pastoril en un viejo pergamino y logró hacerla pasar por una obra del s. XV. A partir de entonces, escribió más poemas de similar estilo, atribuyéndoselos a un monje ficticio al cual llamaba Thomas Rowley. Después de una falsa amenaza de suicidio, que lo liberó de ser aprendiz de un abogado, se trasladó a Londres. Allí obtuvo cierto éxito con una ópera cómica, The Revenge [La revancha]; sin embargo, cuando falleció el que posiblemente iba a ser su protector, se encontró sin dinero y sin futuro, debido a lo cual se suicidó a los 17 años. Considerado uno de los precursores del romanticismo, fue admirado por poetas como Samuel Taylor Coleridge, John Keats, Lord Byron y William Wordsworth.
